How to Get a Cape in Minecraft (October 2026): Every Cape You Can Still Get, and How to Equip It
To get a cape in Minecraft right now, you have three official routes. Every player already owns the Pan Cape and only has to equip it. The Aurora Cape comes from watching rewards-enabled Minecraft Dungeons II streams on TikTok or Twitch until 14 Oct 2026, then redeeming the code by 31 Oct. The Hero Cape unlocks if you've played Minecraft Dungeons and log into Minecraft Dungeons II before 31 Dec 2026. Every other official cape belongs to a promotion that has ended.
Capes can't be drawn or uploaded the way skins can. They're account items that Mojang hands out, so any site offering a "cape generator" is lying to you. Below you'll find the dated list of what's obtainable, the equip steps for each edition, the expired capes and when they ran, and what mod capes like OptiFine's really do. Everything was checked against minecraft.net, Minecraft Help and the Minecraft Wiki on 10 Oct 2026, and we refresh the page monthly because cape promotions come and go fast.
Capes you can get right now
| # | Cape | How to get it | Deadline | Editions | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | Aurora Cape | Watch a rewards-enabled Dungeons II stream: 3 minutes on TikTok or 15 minutes on Twitch. A code arrives in your Twitch Inventory or TikTok notifications; redeem it at minecraft.net/redeem | Watch by 14 Oct 2026, 11:59 PM PST; redeem by 31 Oct 2026 | Java and Bedrock (not in Dungeons II) | minecraft.net, 29 Sep 2026 |
| #2 | Hero Cape | Play Minecraft Dungeons, then log into Minecraft Dungeons II on the same Microsoft account | Log in before 31 Dec 2026 | Java, Bedrock and Dungeons II | minecraft.net, 29 Sep 2026 |
| #3 | Pan Cape | Nothing to do: every player has it | None | Java and Bedrock | Minecraft Wiki |
| #4 | Twisted Cape | Dungeons II pre-order bonus only; pre-orders can still claim it by logging in | No longer sold | Java, Bedrock and Dungeons II | minecraft.net, 29 Sep 2026 |
The Aurora Cape is the time-critical one. Minecraft.net's terms limit it to one code per person and Microsoft account, say supplies are limited, and add that viewing time only counts while a stream is live, so a replay won't earn it. If you're reading this after 14 Oct 2026, that window has closed.
The Hero Cape needs access to both Dungeons games, not just a log-in to one. Mojang's article says to log into Java or Bedrock on the same Microsoft account once Dungeons II shows the cape as equippable, and it will unlock there too. If you'd like the full Dungeons look rather than just the cape, minecraft.net also lists Dungeons and Dungeons II hero skin packs: Java players get them as downloads from the same article, and Bedrock players find them in the Minecraft Marketplace. Disclosure: it's an affiliate link, and a purchase can earn SkinSteps a commission while your price stays the same. Pack prices shift often, which is why none appear here.
Don't confuse these with the Dungeons II-only capes. The same minecraft.net article describes a Soul Cape in the Dungeons II Deluxe Edition, plus a Corrupted Creeper Cape and a Special Cape handed out at events. It names only the Hero and Twisted capes as coming to Minecraft itself, so buying the Deluxe Edition for a Minecraft cape would be a mistake.
How to equip a cape
Owning a cape and wearing it are separate steps, and the order matters. Minecraft Help explains that a newly awarded or redeemed cape appears in your Bedrock Edition profile first. Java only recognises it after you've opened Bedrock and claimed it there. Most "my cape didn't show up on Java" problems come down to skipping that step.
Java Edition
- Wait for the notice that your cape was granted, or redeem your code at minecraft.net/redeem.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher, sign in with your Microsoft account and start Bedrock Edition.
- Open the Dressing Room and find the cape so that it's claimed on your profile, then quit Bedrock.
- Back in the launcher, open Java Edition's Skins tab and highlight the skin you're using.
- Select the three-dot menu, choose Edit, pick the cape and select Save & Use.
- Close and restart Java Edition so it loads the new cape.
The Minecraft Wiki adds that you can also pick a cape from your profile page on minecraft.net. Either way, Java stores capes on Mojang's servers rather than in the game files, so a cape you equip shows on old game versions too. If your skin itself isn't loading, sort that first with our skin not showing fixes, because a cape rides on the same profile.
Bedrock Edition (Windows, mobile and consoles)
On Bedrock, capes are Character Creator items. Open the Dressing Room, go to the Capes section of the Character Creator, choose your cape and equip it. A cape equipped there also works with an imported custom skin in Classic Skins, not only with Character Creator looks. Equipping is identical on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, since nothing has to be imported from a file. For the rest of the Dressing Room, see our Bedrock skin guide.
Expired capes: a short history
For most of Minecraft's life, capes were rare by design. The first ones went to Mojang staff in December 2010, and the MINECON capes, the first the public could earn, were tied to attending the convention in person. The Minecraft Wiki counts around 27,000 MINECON capes in existence. Rarity made cape accounts valuable on black markets and, the Wiki notes, a common target for hacking.
Things opened up with the move to Microsoft accounts. The Migrator Cape went to Java players who migrated their old Mojang account, and once Java and Bedrock were sold together in 2022, new capes started arriving on both editions at once. Since 2023 there has been a steady run of event capes, including Cherry Blossom, 15th Anniversary, Purple Heart, Follower's, MCC 15th Year, Home, Menace, Yearn, Copper, Zombie Horse, Moonlight Trail, Crafter and Builder. All of those promotions have ended; the most recent, the Builder Cape's stream-watching quest, closed in June 2026.
Can you still get the Migrator Cape? No. The Wiki's rule is simple: apart from the Pan Cape, a public cape can't be obtained once its promotion is over, and the Migrator Cape was tied to an account migration that's no longer running. One footnote is worth knowing. The Wiki says Mojang hasn't enforced redemption deadlines for codes from capes released in 2024 and later, so an old code earned during its promotion has sometimes still worked. Don't plan around that. The Aurora terms say to redeem by 31 Oct 2026, so do it before then.
Mod capes (OptiFine and others): who can see them
Mod capes are real, but they live in a separate world. OptiFine's donation page, read on 10 Oct 2026, says a donation earns an OptiFine cape that is "visible to everyone using OptiFine 1.1 B or newer". The page didn't show a donation amount when we read it, so we aren't quoting one. Players without OptiFine see you without the cape, or with your official one if you also wear it.
Other cape mods work the same way. The Minecraft Wiki puts it plainly: unofficial capes from mods are only visible to other users of those mods. That makes a mod cape fine for a friend group that all runs the same mod, and pointless on a public server where most players don't. OptiFine itself is a Java Edition mod, so Bedrock players won't see an OptiFine cape.
Cape generator scams
Search for free capes and you'll find generators, "cape code" giveaways and sellers offering accounts with rare capes. All three are bad deals, for reasons that come straight from Mojang's own terms:
- Generators can't work. Capes are granted to accounts by Mojang and stored on its servers. No website can add one to your profile, so any page that asks for your Microsoft password or a "verification" download is after your account.
- Codes aren't transferable. The Aurora terms say codes are non-transferable and limited to one per person and Microsoft account. A bought code may be used, fake or reclaimed.
- Microsoft can take items back. The same terms let Microsoft remove items or suspend accounts it suspects of fraudulent or abusive activity.
- Bought accounts get recovered. Accounts with rare capes are frequent hacking targets, according to the Wiki, and a resold account can be taken back by whoever first owned it.
If a cape is legitimately on offer, it's announced on minecraft.net and redeemed at minecraft.net/redeem. Anything else should be treated as phishing. The same goes for unofficial launchers that promise capes: they can't show official skins or capes, since without a genuine signed-in account there's nothing to fetch.
Edge cases
A cape that shows in Bedrock but not Java almost always needs the claim-then-edit steps above, followed by a full restart. If it still doesn't appear, check that both games are signed into the same Microsoft account, since capes can't move between accounts. On Java, a cape you own but don't wear isn't public, because Mojang's public profile data only shows the cape you have equipped.
Elytra take on the look of the cape you're wearing, according to the Wiki, so equip the cape you'd like to fly in. Capes are purely cosmetic and change nothing about gameplay. And if you're playing on a server with its own cosmetics plugin, that server may show its own cape items. Those are separate from Mojang's and only exist on that server. Cape questions
How do you get a free cape in Minecraft in 2026?
Equip the Pan Cape, which every player owns. Until 14 Oct 2026 you can also earn the Aurora Cape by watching a rewards-enabled Dungeons II stream (3 minutes on TikTok, 15 on Twitch) and redeeming the code by 31 Oct.
Can you still get the Migrator Cape?
No. It went to Java players who migrated their Mojang account to Microsoft, and public capes can't be obtained after their promotion ends.
How do I equip a cape in Minecraft Java?
Claim the cape in Bedrock's Dressing Room first. Then open the launcher's Java Skins tab, select your skin, choose Edit from the three-dot menu, pick the cape, select Save & Use and restart.
Do OptiFine capes show for everyone?
No. OptiFine says its cape is visible to players using OptiFine 1.1 B or newer. Everyone else sees you without it.
What capes can you get right now?
As of 10 Oct 2026: the Pan Cape (everyone), the Aurora Cape (stream watching until 14 Oct, redeem by 31 Oct) and the Hero Cape (play Minecraft Dungeons, log into Dungeons II before 31 Dec 2026).
